Christian Community Action- Giving Tree

Tanner Richey represents Christian Community Action, a local non-profit organization.   This holiday season, they have great volunteer opportunities for students who are looking for service projects after school and on weekends.
Stonebriar Centre will be hosting their organization with a Giving Tree station.  This allows the community to donate toys and gift cards for students and their siblings in need.  Two volunteers are needed for each 2-hour shift from:

Sunday, December 22, 2019
 
Volunteers will accept toy donations, give receipts, record each donation in records and prepare toys for third party pick up during the last shift.

Collin County History Museum- Summer opportunities available!

Mary Carole Strother is the Museum Executive Director at the Collin County History Museum in historic McKinney, 300 E. Virginia St. She has several different types of volunteer opportunities for Boyd students. The opportunities vary from helping with Summer Camp, (Summer Months: Wednesday Mornings 9-12). Helping on Saturday Mornings beginning as soon as possible.

Hugs, Inc. in DownTown McKinney

Hugs Inc. in downtown McKinney is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that employs adults with special needs. Their mission is to enhance the lives of adults with special needs through training and employment. This is more than just a statement, it’s ingrained in their very soul. In everything they do, they strive to fulfill their mission and to complete their goal of changing the world one hug at a time!

Hugs needs YOUR help. They are looking to build a group of students to work with them on Saturday, Sunday and during the summer months. Students must be at least 16 years old, mature, responsible, full of energy and have a love for working with people with special needs. 

There are currently two locations that will be in need of volunteers. The cafe is located just off the square in downtown McKinney…224 E. Virginia Street and the greenhouse is located at 3054 County Road 205 near Trinity Falls.  

If you have questions, please contact Lee Ann Parsons at leeann@hugscafe.org or by cell (214) 908-8161. She will also be at the cafe at 10:30am on Saturday, March 23rd to meet with any students that might be interested in volunteering.

ManeGait Therapeutic Volunteer

ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship is looking for volunteers. The first step to volunteering with them is completion of the Volunteer Application. The application is electronic and takes about 5 minutes to complete. Once the student has completed the online application, they will receive a link to the online training video and then be invited to the hands on training. The next Volunteer Training is on Saturday, January 12, 2019.

MPAC Usher

McKinney Performing Arts center needs volunteers to Usher at events and performances. Please see below for more information and to sign up to help. 
  • Please leave all personal belongings in your vehicle or at home - the MPAC is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Remove any loose change from your pockets - the noise can be a distraction.
  • Jewelry worn should be minimal and conservative so as to not be a distraction.
  • No chewing gum or hard candy, please.
  • Dress code
    • No jeans or t-shirts.
    • Black and white, any combination top & bottom (school dress code appropriate is a good guideline for student volunteers). Dark gray, navy blue and off-white are acceptable colors. Keep the hard floors and stairs in mind and choose your footwear accordingly.
  • Arrive at the time designated for the position you signed up to fill, report to the Ticket Office, sign in, get a volunteer badge & flashlight.
  • There will be a pre-show briefing to go over event information, position assignments & duties, other activities in the building, emergency evacuation procedure review & closing duties.

The Apex Centre

The Apex Centre is a fitness and recreational facility that is part of the City of McKinney Parks and Recreation Department. We are hosting Wonder December 2-24 at the Gabe Nesbitt Community park to raise money for a scholarship fund. That fund will go to families who would not have the means to participate in the programs we offer otherwise. This can be swim lessons, personal training, camps and much more!
 
Wonder will have a near 50ft tall tree with each individual light programmed to do amazing light shows! We will also have Santa, food trucks, arts/crafts, themed nights, and a concert stage for local schools to host their holiday performances. This event is going to run Monday – Thursday 6:00pm -9:00pm and Friday –Sunday 6:00pm-10:00pm.
 
We are looking for volunteers who can help direct traffic in the parking lots, run activity booths, stage help, ticket scanning,  and concessions.
 
All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older,  pass a drug screen and background check. Volunteers that commit at least 20 hours a month are eligible to receive a free Apex Centre membership.

September 12th - May: Dowell Middle School Robotics Club

The Dowell Middle School Robotics Club is currently looking for 5-6 high school students that would volunteer for our weekly after school Robotics meetings. There are seven teams that meet one day a week at 3:45-5:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday at the Dowell Middle School. Volunteer mentors help the students research Robotic designs and encourage them to work as a team. Each team is led by an adult volunteer coach. Robotics or Engineering class students are valued, but all students are welcome as long as they are dependable and engaging with the middle school students. This is a recurring club that runs from September to May. There will be an annual kickoff meeting on September 12th.
